The Protomelas taeniolatus (Likoma Is.) or Tangerine Tiger cichlid is a larger Haplochromis from Lake Malawi that is native to the waters around Likoma Island. Most males grow to be 8" or 9" in an aquarium. The stunning colors on males are what make these fish popular.  They feature blue heads, red/orange dorsal, anal, and tail fins, and yellow bodies with black vertical stripes. Dominant males are brilliant blue on the head and back, accented with yellow flanks and belly and a red spotted anal fin.

These colorful Protomelas are often confused with the Peacock cichlids.  They are members of the Haplochromis family of African Cichlids.
