This fish, along with a few other fish, is often called by the common name Electric Blue Johanni but the more accurate name is Maingano Cichlid. This fish has the usual torpedo like body shape of most African cichlids, with brilliant electric blue and black stripes horizontally down each side. The darker colors sometimes "bleed" onto the lighter blue creating a stunning light and dark blue variate striping. They can be housed with other Malawi cichlid tank mates. The males and the females are nearly the same color - the females vary slightly with lighter color bellies and shorter pelvic fins. The females do not attain the same size as the males.
The Maingano is a very active and colorful fish.
